The wide angle of his ingenious composition allows the viewer to experience not only the grandeur of the Cathedral, but also the majesty of its setting.
In rich variations of greens, yellows and browns he defines the grassy foreground as being lush and fertile. Translucent oil paints are masterfully applied to the numerous mother-of-pearl inlays to generate tremendous depth-of-field. In order to bring the natural setting into perfect harmony, Dubovikov offsets the vivid colors of the clouds in the sky with those of the water in the lake. By doing so, he puts the cathedral and the surrounding land into a horizontal frame that is wide open in each direction:
Notice, how the cathedral, the belfry and the smaller chapel are set apart just enough, so that one's eye does not focus strictly on them, but rather scans smoothly from side to side.
